Funding & Incentives

There are various funding sources and incentive schemes that are made available in Holyhead. The following provides a summary of the main schemes. The list is not comprehensive, and other schemes may exist which are relevant to your project. The listing of schemes here does not necessarily mean that they are currently available, or that your project will qualify.

Property Investment

Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) - A scheme to assist improving buildings within certain designated Conservation Areas, including Holyhead Town Centre which has been allocated circa £3M. The Holyhead THI Project Manager is Nathan Blanchard tel. 01248 752461

Landlords Housing Support schemes may be in place to encourage investment in existing buildings to create housing units to rent. Contact Anglesey CC Housing Servicet tel. 01248 750057 to check status.

Business & Industry

Business Support Funds

Anglesey County Council wishes to assist small and medium sized businesses to invest and the Holyhead Investment Fund (HIF) is available for a limited time. Contact Anglesey Business Centre tel.01248 752480/ Business Investment Loans/ Finance Wales - is a Welsh Government initiative to provide business investment loans to eligible business growth projects - see www.financewales.co.uk for further details.

Major Regeneration / Infrastructure/ Economic Projects

The following funds have been secured in Holyhead :- 

European Objective One and Convergence Funds (see below)

  • Welsh Government Local Regeneration Fund 
  • Welsh Government Transport Grant 
  • Welsh Government - Other Schemes

European Funds

Holyhead is located within an EU Objective One area, and has been able to qualify for funds under various categories since 2001. The funding was allocated in a number of specific eligibility categories, each with its own criteria. Funds had to be applied for, in competition with other projects from across West Wales and the Valleys. Up to March 2006, Objective One funding approvals for Anglesey totalled circa £30M, of which circa £10M was approved for projects located in Holyhead.

EU Convergence Funding

A new round of EU regional support funding for West Wales and the Valleys has been confirmed, and some projects have been approved. This "Convergence Fund" will be available for up to seven years, and is similar in scale to Objective One. The funding arrangements and eligible activities differ from those under the Objective One programme. See the WEFO website for the latest information.
